Picked this up from Gizmodo, this looks like he created this entire grid/paper/foldout system to create an elaborate animation sequence. He then filmed the sequence and sped it up post production so that everything would look relatively fluid.
Content aside, it’s a pretty brilliant idea. Has to be seen to be understood.
